This is my second version of Red Riding Hood and the Wolf and I am really liking the evolution of the characters. In my first version, the wolf was much more “grandmotherly.” In this one Red is getting older and their embrace is much more sweet. You see the friendship growing between the two as they meet in a hidden forest glen lit by only moonlight.
I created the free-form sculpture using polymer clay over a hollow duck egg shell. The polymer is light-weight yet adds strength to the egg making it quite durable. I decided to hang the egg from an antique gold chain looped through an open metalwork bead.
What I love about working with fairytale themes is the variety in how you can portray a familiar subject. There are so many stories waiting to be told within the one subject. Depending on my mood, the Wolf could devour Red or they cold live happily ever after.
