I had a stretch goal of entering my first juried art show this year, The Blair County Arts Festival (read the background here). All three of my submissions were accepted and now I’m celebrating my small (but big-to-me) success that came from taking a chance. “Freedom,” my dragon sculpture, received an honorable mention and a cash prize. Not bad for a first attempt!
It was fun attending the artists’ award ceremony yesterday and watching the kids gravitate my happy pieces. “Freedom” may have been an artistic success, but “Time in Wonderland” was a real crowd pleaser. I also enjoyed talking to the other artists who weren’t familiar with polymer clay and were intrigued by the results that you could achieve without paint.
After enjoying my 5 minutes of fame at the show, I’ve already started to think about what I’d do differently next time. Scale it up!
My pieces were designed for more intimate spaces, so it isn’t surprising that they pieces needed more visual weight in the gallery display. That is something I’ll try to improve for future works.
