The ornament is an eggshell covered with polymer clay which makes it lightweight, yet durable.
I loved the challenge of figuring out how to create the wings without painting. Hello mokume gane! This is a technique where you stack sheets of clay and then slice off pieces to reveal a pattern. You can see in the photo below a block that looks like a licorice candy. That is what I used for the feathers.
